You may have noticed that your Matchmaking Rating (MMR) suddenly changed after the end of the season. Don’t worry! I’ll explain why.
But first, let’s cover the difference between “Seasons” and Off-seasons.”

Seasons Vs Off-Seasons
Seasons come and go in Axie Infinity.
Seasons are certain periods of time where players can duke it out in the arena and reach the top of the leaderboards. Last season, Season 18, lasted for a month and premier players that reached the top 1,000 were given AXS as rewards. Congratulations!
As of October, 2021, we are in the off-season and it’s expected to last for a month as well.
For reference, here are the previous dates where the past 3 Seasons and off-seasons have started and ended:
- Season 16 — March 22 – April 18, 2021
- Offseason — April 18 – May 17, 2021
- Season 17 — May 17 – June 13, 2021
- Offseason — June 13 – August 9, 2021
- Season 18 — August 9 – September 19, 2021
- Offseason — September 19 – TBA (probably around mid-October)
What Is The Off-Season?
The off-season is basically the time in-between two seasons where users can still play the game before gameplay changes can be implemented. Players often use this time to experiment with different Axie builds and team compositions.
Developers also use this time to address possible issues or balance changes that they may implement for the next season.
In a nutshell, the off-season is kind of like a more chill and laid-back version of regular seasons. The rankings don’t matter (unless you’re REALLY competitive) because rewards will not be given and players tend to have a less competitive mood, especially if they’re trying out new stuff.
After this off-season, we’ll enter Season 19 and reset once more.
Why Did My MMR Change?
A player’s MMR is different depending on the season. Seasonal MMRs reset after every season and everyone starts at 1,200.
Once the season ends, a player’s MMR temporarily reverts back to their off-season MMR. This MMR doesn’t reset but also isn’t used to rank players and give seasonal rewards.
For example, if you started playing the game during the off-season and you reached an MMR of 1,300, that will still be your MMR for the next off-season.
Final Thoughts on the MMR Reset
Don’t panic if your MMR suddenly dropped at the end of a season! That’s a completely normal and intended feature. Just sit back, relax, and enjoy the off-season.
Try a different team, breed a new Axie, or play around with different cards. Who knows? Maybe you’ll discover the next big Axie meta.
Pro Tips:
- Use the off-season to experiment with different Axies, compositions, and card combinations
- You can climb to high MMR during the off-season so you can still gain decent amounts of SLP even if it’s not the regular season
- The first few days after the MMR reset can be quite hectic because everyone starts at 1,200 and you can face off against high MMR players with amazing teams
